Survivors' Art Exhibit

This show will be on display from May 1, 2006 to May 12, 2006. The opening reception is May 5, 2006 from 7-9pm.

In its tenth year, the Survivors’ Art Exhibit is a unique showcase that underscores the survivor’s journey, from initial victimization to resolution. Through a variety of media: painting, drawing, watercolor, photography, poetry, and sculpture, survivors create personal stories of domestic violence, family violence, sexual abuse, sexual assault, child abuse, spiritual abuse, and other forms of personal violence.

In it’s tenth year, the Survivors’ Art Exhibit is a unique showcase that underscores the survivor’s journey, from initial victimization to resolution. Through a variety of media: painting, drawing, watercolor, photography, poetry and sculpture, survivors create personal stories of domestic violence, family violence, sexual abuse, sexual assault, child abuse, spiritual abuse and other forms of interpersonal violence. Their work is a palette showing the depth of their trauma and the resilience, strength and beauty of the survivor; bringing form to the unexpressed and unimaginable. This exhibit shows that recovery can be enhanced through creative means. Art helps the artist gain insight into experiences that have had a profound effect on their lives. Viewers of this showcase will be touched by the surviving spirit of the artists. Both female and male artists in the community and on campus, who are survivors of interpersonal violence, and who have used art in their healing process, will courageously share their work. Over 350 artists have participated in the show over the past ten years. The Sexual Battery Committee of the Gainesville Commission on the Status of Women, in conjunction with the UF Counseling Center and the UF Arts and Crafts Center, hopes the Survivors’ Art Exhibit 2006 will be a reciprocal educational and healing experience for both participants and audience. The Sexual Battery Committee sponsors the exhibit in conjunction with it’s 25th Annual Conference, “Reflect, Examine, Challenge: Perspectives on Gender, Society, & Violence”, to be held Tuesday, May 9th 2006 at the Reitz Union. The art exhibit, free and open to the general public, runs from May 1 - May 12, 2006.
