Conventional Wisdoms

The senior class of University of Florida's Creative Photography majors presents Conventional Wisdoms, a collection of color and black & white creative photography. Exhibition will be on display January 22 to February 2, 2007. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2007.

Katelyn Batick, Kim Klement, Daniel Ypsilanti, Courtney Donhaiser, and Kristen Moore all use the convention of information carrying photography as the starting place for their unusual projects; the photographic essay (Katelyn and Kim), the journalistic image on the printed page (Dan), and critical product photography (Kristen). Katie Huerbsch and Josh Hobson make images which are remote and otherworldly even though they are comprised of objects that can easily be identified. Natalie Cisneros and Nadya Maree present portraiture; the singular representation vs. the group stereotype. Amy Gagnon and Sarah Rupert make images of the female figure with different results; Amy referencing photographic fashion conventions and Sarah staging surreal events for her photographs. Nicolette Nagy and Aaron Marsh photograph literal places and things but arrive at images which defy representation; pareidolic images of faces formed without digital manipulation from flames and burning embers (Nicolette), and luminescent large format photographs of air and space at night (Aaron). Laura Sala and Michael Thompson also photograph at night; Laura photographs people in abandoned cityscapes and on industrial corners, while Michael uses the camera to make static images of places that by day make people feel frozen in time.

All seek to to question the neutrality of the photographic image while satisfying the high visual standards of their craft and photographic practice
