RUB puts on FREE events almost daily at the Reitz Union with the combined efforts of five different committees and an Executive Board.
The Live Music Committee is dedicated to bringing a varied musical experience to the diverse student body. We are always looking to bring new and unique forms of music and entertainment ranging from local talent to nationwide acts to the Union. Such past programs include: The Flaming Lips, TV on the Radio, Cursive, Of Montreal, Mae, Lyrics Born, and Kid Koala. Keep you ears open for what is to come this year. The Live Music committee also hosts two bi-weekly music series in the Orange and Brew. Alternating Thursday nights at 8:30pm is the Local Brew (local bands) and the Brew Showcase (a more diverse mix of music). Rap, R&B, Ska, Punk, Rock, Pop, Reggae, Jazz, Hip Hop…you name it, we’ll play it!
The Special Events committee works to bring a wide range of entertainment for the student body. They host events in conjunction with other RUB committees and also plan and execute their own events. Past events have included RUB-a-palooza, a psychic fair, hypnotist show, Stuff-a-Bear, Sandy Candy, Casino Nights, and Game Live.
The Lecturers/Comedians committee provides insight and laughter to the student body. Events occur all throughout the Reitz Union, ranging from improv groups to sex lecturers. Past performances have included the Upright Citizens Brigade, Charlie Murphy, J-Spot the sex educator, and Frank Warren of PostSecret.com.
The Film committee plans and manages the weekly FREE film screening at the Reitz Union Cinema and also picks the movies that are shown as part of Gator Nights. Films draw from a wide variety of genres, from small, independent films to blockbuster hits to cult classics. The film committee also plans extra film-related events such as trivia nights, movies on the lawn, and everyone’s favorite—advanced screenings.
The Public Relations committee works to publicize events on campus and around Gainesville. Each member of the committee gains experience working with media contacts, guerilla marketing, and graphic design, while helping to advertise for RUB events. The also hold a RUB week in the Spring to get the word out about RUB and encourage people to apply for the organization for the following year.
